Dear Families,

Thank you for showing interest in the Chetek Family Fishing Club.   The summer of 2009 will be the inaugural year of the fishing club.  Recently, I surveyed families in the

School District of Chetek

to find out what they were looking for in a fishing club.    Twenty families returned their surveys and the following results determined this years events, prizes and registration fee.

60 % of families chose Sunday night

55 % chose 6pm as a start time

45 % of families don’t have a boat

Bluegill was the most popular fish

50 % chose $10 as a proper registration fee

60 % voted to have no individual prizes

65 % wanted a grand prize

80 % voted to have a first, second and third place prize

60 % of families thought they could only attend one event per month

I used these results to come up with a schedule that will hopefully fit our club member’s fishing needs this summer.  Please don’t be discouraged from registering your family for the club if you don’t have a boat.  I am going to take the next month to research ways to get families in a boat at an affordable cost.   Some families made the remark that the fishing club will prompt them to purchase a boat.   Owning your own boat can bring out new opportunities for you families to be together.  Again, the following values are important for our club to be successful this summer.  Our club members will:

  1. Promote fishing knowledge
  2. Encourage participation in an enjoyable relaxing outdoor sport
  3. Promote catch, photo, and release
  4. Foster respect for nature and teach children how precious natural resources are to the future of our planet.
  5. Promote fishing as a family event even if the family is a single parent family
  6. All fishing club events should promote families fishing together.
  7. Each family fishing event will contain a period after or before the event for a social hour at a designate location near the boat landing where families will meet.
  8. Good sportsmanship and honesty throughout the competition.
  9. To promote that fishing can be an inexpensive sport and you don’t need a fancy boat or boat at all to be in the club.
  10. Chetek is a great place to live!

If families follow these expectations, you will find that your experience will be more fulfilling and rewarding on the water.  In addition, after each event you should go over these values on your event card in order to be eligible for the grand prize drawing at the end of the season. Every event you attend this summer will give you a better chance to win the grand prize at the end of the season banquet at

Airport Park

on Sunday, September 13th.

To be an official Chetek Fishing Club member, you will need fill out the attached registration card and pay your registration fee of $15 before Friday, May 15th.    Your $10 dollars will go towards the grand prize and $5 will pay for your family’s dinner at the kick off night at The Pokegama on Sunday, May 17th.    Please make checks payable to “The Chetek Family Fishing Club”.  I’ve set up an account at the First National Bank to hold our registration money and donations.  At the kick off dinner, I will discuss our guidelines for the club and each event I would like to give a short fishing seminar of the targeted species.  Please feel free to provide your knowledge of the lake, favorite spots and hot lures.   These are some of the guidelines that will make our club rewarding for the participants, promote our values, and give some competitiveness to each event.

Event Guidelines

  1. The club encourages you to fish with your children or a community youth.
  2. Please practice CPR- Catch, Photo, and Release
  3. Families should complete event card and return it to Andy Schommer before leaving the boat landing.
  4. Adults should be fishing and helping youths in their boats.
  5. Please share your photos with others through emails and www.bigcatchfishing.com so they can be posted for others to view.   The Chetek Alert would like to see your photos as well to possibly publish in their sport section.
  6. Please come early to social events to allow children to play together, to meet other club members and share fishing techniques.

Since this is the first year, it is important that everyone reaches out to the club to give it a solid look.   We could use ideas for a logo for apparel, website ideas, promotions, donations for prizes, lending the use of an extra boat, texting, blogging, etc. It is also important to remember that when you sign up you are giving your children the opportunity to go after that next “Big Catch”.    A fishing experience can provide a photo or memory that could last a lifetime.   I hope to see you on the water this summer.

Sincerely,

Andrew Schommer
